When planning a brand new bed for planting, it is helpful to lay out the perimeter with a garden hose or rope to plan the edges and how they best flow with your landscape. Consider ease of mowing, and walkways to plan border locations. Also, consider the amount of sunlight that will reach the area to determine which plants to choose.

Mulching is important to protect the new plants, as it insulates from temperature extremes, conserves water, and improves soil quality as it decomposes. Further, it keeps weeds at bay. A layer of 4” – 6” of mulch is good for a brand new bed, but be sure not to allow it to disperse to less than 3” to ensure that light does not penetrate to the soil below, as lack of light is what will discourage weed seeds from germinating.

Dig out the turf or trim it closely to the ground. Other options include spraying the area with Roundup. Adding a rich layer of Screened Top Soil or Top Soil – Compost Mix is a good idea for a new bed, as the soil will be instantly fertile and help your plantings to thrive. Define the edges of your bed by edging it, either with a half-moon edger or spade. There are also Edge-hog tools available with a circular blade on wheels which is superior for creating curved edges. The edge should be refined to a depth of 4” – 6” at a 90° angle, ideally, removing all turf that has been loosened.

At this point, if you plan on using plastic or landscape fabric as a weed deterrent, it should be spread over the area. Eventually, these materials can decompose, especially if light is allowed to penetrate to plastic. Biodegradable options include layers of newspaper or cardboard. Consider the flow of water if using a plastic barrier, allowing plenty of space around plants for water to seep into roots.

Cover the area with mulch to a depth of 4” – 6”, raking to smooth evenly. Allow space around plant stems and trunks to allow the plants to breathe. Smothering stems with mulch can cause them to rot.

Replenishing Your Mulch Bed

Organic mulch should be replenished once each year, either in the spring or fall, as it breaks down into the soil. Replenish with a top layer of 1” – 2”. In the fall, vulnerable plants can be covered completely for overwintering. Be sure to uncover them in the spring. Rake to loosen existing mulch. Remove any weeds, either with rake, by hand, or spray with Roundup before spreading on new layer. A freshly mulched bed will beautify your landscape exponentially.

1. Plan before you buy.

If you’re going to spread topsoil over a large area, keep in mind that a single cubic yard of topsoil weighs over a ton. It will probably make the most sense to have your materials delivered. If you do plan to transport your landscape supplies from the shop to your home, be sure to use a truck or SUV instead of a compact hatchback.

2. Know how much of each landscaping material you’ll need.

A cubic yard of mulch or topsoil that is spread two inches deep covers about 120 square feet (or about 80 square feet at a depth of three inches). 3. Prepare the plot before you mulch your front yard.

Don’t mulch too early in the spring; your soil may not be warm enough, and the mulch will keep the ground cool. Plus, you should weed your beds and water any plants before spreading the mulch.

4. If you are mulching around trees (or plants with wooded stems)…

Leave an inch or two of space between the mulch and the base of the trunks. This will help prevent rotting of the bark and eliminate hiding places for plant-eating pests like slugs or rodents.

You can either make a walking path through the mulch or place flagstones together for a square or rectangular surface to create a sitting area or potted plant display space.

7. If you have a small area (like a courtyard or side yard)…

One idea is to spread gravel or pea rocks across the entire plot and “sprinkle” in boulders, tiles, or other types of rocks. It will give the spot a Zen-like eel, and you won’t have to mow or weed it!

8. If you have a signature or special plant or tree…

…You may want to construct a slate stone semicircle to accentuate it. Stack rectangular stones two or three high in a semicircle in front of the plant or tree, making sure to give its root system enough room. Then dump mulch into the semicircle to a depth higher than the earth around it. The stones will hold the mulch in place and draw the eye to the featured plant or tree.

Mulch can be either organic, as in the case of shredded wood with compost, or inorganic, as in various decorative stones. While inorganic choices will last longer, there is still some maintenance to consider. Weed seeds will blow and find their way into any surface, so some weeding, either by hand or chemically with Roundup, is necessary. Every few years, the top should be restored with a light layer to compensate for the settling and sinking that occurs over time. Inorganic materials should be spread at a depth of 2 – 4 inches.

Organic mulches need to be replenished more often, either each year, or every other year. The organic components break down, which enriches the soil for nutrients. An existing mulch bed should be top-dressed with 2 – 3 inches of mulch. A new bed should be established with 4 – 6 inches. Be sure to leave space at the base of plants, you don’t want to bury them. If you are laying Playground Chips for a recreational area, 6 inches is the recommended depth, as it is to be a cushion for falls.

Consider the structure that you are landscaping. A formal style dwelling would benefit from a formal landscape plan, which would include symmetry. How to create a beautiful waterscape…

A swimming pool can be the social centerpiece to the summer for your friends and your family, so it’s worth putting that extra effort into making it a beautiful and inviting waterscape.

Mulch and landscape stone can turn your pool into an attractive garden space, making your yard into the perfect summer hangout, however you should make sure you’re using the right materials, in the right kind of combination.

What is the best landcape material to use around a pool?

While mulch is a great landscaping material for placing around plants, be careful not to place a mulched area too close to the water. It can be very effective to have mulched plant life around the perimeter of your pool, as a transition from the pool to your lawn, but take into consideration what happens when gusty winds blow.

Landscaping Ideas Around Pools With Concrete

1” Pure Red Landscape Stone, with its deep brick red color, blends well with other accents at this home. This particular setting has ample concrete immediately bordering the water, providing a smooth walking area (click here for a coupon for stamped concrete designs around pools).

Between the concrete paving and the lawn, you can create a hardscape wall filled with the decorative red stone, which provides drainage from water runoff from the concrete.

If you have a retaining wall, or fenced border, you can finish this off further with another bed of red stone to allow for easier mowing along the fence line.

Landscaping Ideas Around Pools Without Concrete

Different pool settings will have different needs. Areas without concrete, that may come into contact with bare feet, will require a smoother, rounded stone. Brown Landscape Stone is another option, but it is recommended that you use a larger size, either 1” or 2”, which will be less likely to blow when using a hand blower to clean leaves and debris from the beds. The smallest size, ½”, is also referred to as Pea Gravel, and would be too small to use a hand blower to clean out debris.

A very popular option is River Jacks, which are multi-colored and smooth, and lend a very tasteful appearance to waterscape settings. Besides their natural beauty, these smooth rounded stones are easy on bare feet, as well.

Be sure to prep the area where the beds will be by removing or killing all weeds with an herbicide like Roundup. Then lay a thick black landscaping plastic down and spread the stone 3” – 4” deep. The beds will be easy to maintain and provide many years of landscaping beauty.

Choosing the Right Plants for your Waterscape

Consider plants that won’t produce a great deal of debris for your planting. Common choices include upright yews, which do not have large leaves, but shed fine needles, instead. Blue rug junipers are another low-growing option.

Shrubbery should be pruned in fall or early spring while plants are dormant, and the cover is still on your pool. Errant weeds that pop up can be hand-weeded or sprayed with Roundup.

Hand weeding leaves a cleaner appearance, but be sure to get the roots, or they will return. An herbicide will kill the entire weed down to the roots, and the dead weed debris can be removed later.

In spite of the bugs and beetles that have plagued my plot, I will still plant potatoes, squash, pumpkins, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, and onions. The cantaloupe was small, but sweet. Herbs are easy and enjoyable. And I’ll be sure to plant spinach, and some lettuce. I had a blazing success with my zinnias, so I intend to enlarge the area I plant with them. I will probably experiment with other cut flowers, as well. The watering, harvesting, and canning and freezing of all those lovely vegetables just about did me in last year. So, the flowers will reign supreme this year.

I have wondered whether it would do the plot good to lie fallow for a year, a very tempting thought in the midst of the work. I considered that the bugs that show up each year might die away if I didn’t replenish their food supply. I suspect there is a fungus in the soil that likes my onions. Instead, I will probably top-dress it with fresh Top Soil enriched with Compost  and hope that the fertilizer rich soil will produce healthy crops as well as last year. Even with the onslaught of pests, I still had a sizable harvest, as my freezer still has plenty of bounty in February.  Perhaps abundance is not so bad; some for the pests, and more for me. I’ll be sure to rotate crop locations. I make a sketch each year of where I will plant each crop, and can refer to it the following year. While stone driveways are the least expensive to create, they require the most maintenance, in comparison to concrete, asphalt, or pavers.  The slope, curves, stability of the sub-grade, and climate in your area will be the factors that most influence the amount of maintenance needed.

Steeper slopes will need proper grading for adequate drainage away from the driveway, to prevent run-off from eroding and washing away stone. A crown, or higher point, in the center of a driveway helps direct run-off to the edges to prevent pooling of rainwater. Applying an herbicide annually, or bi-annually, as needed, will keep grasses and weeds at bay.

Keeping in creeping grass and weeds from the edge assures a neater appearance. Gravel that is displaced by traffic patterns on curves and areas of stopping and acceleration will need to be raked back into place, or replenished. And finally, the stone that is displaced during snow removal in cold climates needs to be raked back from the yard each spring.

What Types of Landscape Stone Are Best For Your Driveway

Driveway With Crusher Run Stone

Stone should be replenished about every two to three years. Stone should be about 2 – 4 inches thick, depending on conditions.

A stone with an angular shape will lock together, and reduces the movement created by traffic. Smooth rounded stones are better used in low traffic areas or in decorative beds.

A larger size stone, such as 2″ White/Grey Stone, is better for a base, which is needed for stability and drainage.  1″ White/Grey Stone is good for a second layer.

The smaller 1/2″ White/Grey Stone is easier to shovel, and compacts better than larger stone, but consider your climate and traffic patterns, as it will displace a bit more easily. Crusher Run Stone is excellent for a top layer, as the stone dust in it helps the driveway pack down tightly.

An Important Note About Crusher Run Stone

Keep in mind that a driver is often asked to “dump spread” the stone where possible. This saves the home owner from raking and shoveling large amounts of stone. If a driveway is relatively level, and there are no overhanging branches or power lines, a driver can often move the truck along while slowly lifting the truck bed to help spread the stone along the length of a driveway.

While it is difficult to control how evenly the stone falls off the truck bed, it can still save a great deal of labor in dispersing the stone. Crusher Run Stone CANNOT be dump spread, however, due to the fact that the stone dust in it causes it to clump and catch at the base of the dump bed. This can be dumped at intervals along the driveway to be spread by shovel and rake.

I have some frozen pumpkin puree in my freezer that I made myself with the Sugar Pie pumpkins from my garden, and I’d like to share the pumpkin puree recipe I used to make it.

It takes a little more time and effort than just buying it in a can from the store, but the rewards are long-lasting. My freezer is stocked with zip-lock bags containing 2 cup  increments of frozen puree, ready for pies, pumpkin bread, cookies, and more.

If you’re not sure what to do with the pumpkin on your front porch when the season is over, here is a productive idea! Of course, your pumpkin should be crisp and fresh, discard any that have signs of rotting or deterioration.

Pumpkin Puree Recipe

Set your oven to 325 ̊ F. Cut the pumpkin in half crosswise, and scoop out strings and seeds. The seeds are delicious and healthy, so save them!

Place the pumpkin halves on a baking sheet, shell side UP, and bake for at least 1 hour, depending on the size of your pumpkin. Watch for it to begin sinking and falling apart as it becomes tender.

When it has softened and cooked through, remove it from the oven and cool.

Then scrape the pulp from the shell and run it through a ricer, strainer, or blender. I use an old ricer that my dear departed grandmother used to make applesauce. (I love to use her kitchen things. It makes me feel like she’s with me).

Then simply scoop the puree into a 2 cup liquid measuring cup, and pour into zip-lock freezer bags. Press out excess air, and label with a permanent marker. I find that this increment is perfect for most recipes. I think there is a definite difference in the quality and taste of goods made with this healthy homemade puree.

The seeds can be separated from the fiber and rinsed in the sink. Then place them in a sauce pan and cover with salted water.

Bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 1-2 hours. Do not allow pan to dry.

Drain and dry them on paper towels or brown paper. Then, they can be spread on a shallow baking sheet, coated with cooking oil, or melted butter, and seasoned with salt or Old Bay and toasted in the oven at 250 ̊ F until golden brown, stirring occasionally.

Other recipes call for a shorter simmer time on the stove, followed by roasting in a 400 ̊ F oven until browned. What’s the Difference Between Regular Topsoil, Screened Topsoil, and Fill Dirt? Topsoil Maryland | Gardening Advice

Here at Westminster Lawn Landscape Supply Yards, we are often asked the question “What is the difference?” between Regular Top Soil, Screened Top Soil, and Fill Dirt. For starters, we get premium grade Maryland top soil and sift it through a screener to produce our Screened Top Soil which has had the stones sifted out.

Screened Topsoil

This makes for easier work when spreading the soil for seeding and planting purposes. As the soil is sifted by topsoil screeners, stones larger than 1″ are removed as well as any clumps, creating good topsoil for garden beds. This process creates the best bedding soil for top dressing on lawns and for most planting situations.

Topsoil Maryland

Regular Top Soil is simply soil that has not been screened. It is still good for planting purposes, but may need to be raked after it is spread to remove clumps and stones. If there are larger, deeper areas that need to be filled in to even out the grade of the terrain, then seeded, Regular Top Soil will work well for this purpose. The top layer may need some raking to finish it off before seeding.

Fill Dirt

Fill Dirt is how we refer to the clumps and stones that don’t go through the screener. It is not good for any planting purposes, but is useful to fill in holes. Usually, either Regular or Screened Top Soil is spread over the top of Fill Dirt to create the best garden topsoil for planting.

Compost Screened Topsoil Mix

We also offer a Compost – Screened Topsoil Mix, composed of premium Screened Topsoil with Compost mixed in, which enriches the soil, making it ideal for garden topsoil.
