Many people in Carroll County, and around Maryland, are opening up their pools for the year, so we at Westminster Lawn Landscape Supply Yards wanted to post an article with some landscaping ideas around pools.  

How to create a beautiful waterscape…

A swimming pool can be the social centerpiece to the summer for your friends and your family, so it’s worth putting that extra effort into making it a beautiful and inviting waterscape.

Mulch and landscape stone can turn your pool into an attractive garden space, making your yard into the perfect summer hangout, however you should make sure you’re using the right materials, in the right kind of combination.

What is the best landcape material to use around a pool?

While mulch is a great landscaping material for placing around plants, be careful not to place a mulched area too close to the water.  It can be very effective to have mulched plant life around the perimeter of your pool, as a transition from the pool to your lawn, but take into consideration what happens when gusty winds blow.

Landscaping Ideas Around Pools With Concrete

1” Pure Red Landscape Stone, with its deep brick red color, blends well with other accents at this home. This particular setting has ample concrete immediately bordering the water, providing a smooth walking area (click here for a coupon for stamped concrete designs around pools).

Between the concrete paving and the lawn, you can create a hardscape wall filled with the decorative red stone, which provides drainage from water runoff from the concrete.

If you have a retaining wall, or fenced border, you can finish this off further with another bed of red stone to allow for easier mowing along the fence line.

Landscaping Ideas Around Pools Without Concrete

Different pool settings will have different needs. Areas without concrete, that may come into contact with bare feet, will require a smoother, rounded stone. Brown Landscape Stone is another option, but it is recommended that you use a larger size, either 1” or 2”, which will be less likely to blow when using a hand blower to clean leaves and debris from the beds. The smallest size, ½”, is also referred to as Pea Gravel, and would be too small to use a hand blower to clean out debris.

A very popular option is River Jacks, which are multi-colored and smooth, and lend a very tasteful appearance to waterscape settings. Besides their natural beauty, these smooth rounded stones are easy on bare feet, as well.

Be sure to prep the area where the beds will be by removing or killing all weeds with an herbicide like Roundup. Then lay a thick black landscaping plastic down and spread the stone 3” – 4” deep. The beds will be easy to maintain and provide many years of landscaping beauty.

Choosing the Right Plants for your Waterscape

Consider plants that won’t produce a great deal of debris for your planting. Common choices include upright yews, which do not have large leaves, but shed fine needles, instead. Blue rug junipers are another low-growing option.

Shrubbery should be pruned in fall or early spring while plants are dormant, and the cover is still on your pool. Errant weeds that pop up can be hand-weeded or sprayed with Roundup.

Hand weeding leaves a cleaner appearance, but be sure to get the roots, or they will return. An herbicide will kill the entire weed down to the roots, and the dead weed debris can be removed later.

Friday the 13^th of April, was a LUCKY day for Westminster Lawn sponsored #35 sprint car driver Steve Owings in the 358 Sprint Feature at Trail-way Speedway in McSherrystown, PA!

Starting from 4^th position after the #66B car, driven by Cory Brockman, decided to forfeit his front-row position to start at the rear, Steve was able to take the top side and make passes through turns one and two. After taking the lead, it was no contest, as he finished well ahead of the sixteen car field.

“The way this car was running in practice and in the heat, I would not have been happy with second place tonight” Owings reported to Area Auto Racing News staff reporter Steve Barrick.  “You can come from the back here” Owings remarked, but admitted “The car felt really good, but the end can’t come soon enough when you’re leading.” The previous race, on Friday April 6^th, Steve started in 14^th position in the field and moved up to finish at 5^th place, with only 1 caution flag during the race. That feat won him a gift certificate to Mike’s Crab House in Hanover for passing the most cars. Watch the video of Steve’s post-race interview here:

Veteran driver Owings has been racing for over thirty years, and has a long history of racing at Trail-Way Speedway in all classes of competition. This was his fifth career 358 sprint win at Trail-Way. “The triple-chassis just likes it here for some reason,” he reported after the victory. Sprint car drivers rely on support from sponsors to make it through the year in a very expensive sport. While flips and crashes are exciting for the fans, they are costly for drivers.

Guide to Landscape Supply Delivery

Customer Responsibilities

Must be home or leave a bucket, cone, or sign where to dump landscape materials. Customer assumes all responsibility for towing, ground ruts, hourly rates, and any underground fixtures such as irrigation, septic tanks, etc.  Driver will use discretion when determining if a dump site is safe. Other hazards include overhead tree limbs and utility wires. Alternate dump site may be designated.

Payment

Prior to unloading any materials, the delivery driver will request payment by cash or check; credit card payment is available through the office.  Mastercard and Visa accepted.

Directions

A specific destination address is required.  Give a detailed description of the drop site: describe any sidewalks or landscaping that will prohibit the truck from driving up directly beside the site.

Driveways/Walkways

The weight of a typical delivery truck can cause damage to concrete or stone pavements.  Trucks will not drive on new pavement or asphalt.  These applications take up to one year to cure, and may be damaged by the weight.  Operation may also be limited to steep grades.

Overhead Concerns

When scheduling a delivery, be sure to let your salesperson know at the time of scheduling about any power lines, tree limbs, or other overhead objects that could obstruct the movement of the dump truck.

Underground Concerns

The location of septic lines, sprinkler heads, underground drains and utility lines are all important to the capabilities of the truck to drive in certain areas.  The delivery truck weight could cause damage to any of these items if present.  Be sure to advise your salesperson or driver of their presence.

Children/Pets

Keep pets penned up and children out of the vicinity during the delivery.  Drivers are unable to see objects in their mirrors that are directly behind the truck.

Weather

Take weather conditions into consideration.  If the ground is wet, it may be difficult for the truck to deliver without damaging grass or landscaping.  Westminster Lawn Landscape Supply may reschedule deliveries because of weather concerns.

There are many factors that may prevent a product from being placed in a certain area.  Drivers’ decisions will be made on the basis of potential safety hazards and property damage.  Remember that while we will do our best to satisfy your requests, our first commitment is to the safety of everyone involved.

What’s the Difference Between Regular Topsoil, Screened Topsoil, and Fill Dirt? Topsoil Maryland | Gardening Advice

Here at Westminster Lawn Landscape Supply Yards, we are often asked the question “What is the difference?” between Regular Top Soil, Screened Top Soil, and Fill Dirt. For starters, we get premium grade Maryland top soil and sift it through a screener to produce our Screened Top Soil which has had the stones sifted out.

Screened Topsoil

This makes for easier work when spreading the soil for seeding and planting purposes. As the soil is sifted by topsoil screeners, stones larger than 1″ are removed as well as any clumps, creating good topsoil for garden beds. This process creates the best bedding soil for top dressing on lawns and for most planting situations.

Topsoil Maryland

Regular Top Soil is simply soil that has not been screened. It is still good for planting purposes, but may need to be raked after it is spread to remove clumps and stones. If there are larger, deeper areas that need to be filled in to even out the grade of the terrain, then seeded, Regular Top Soil will work well for this purpose. The top layer may need some raking to finish it off before seeding.

Fill Dirt

Fill Dirt is how we refer to the clumps and stones that don’t go through the screener. It is not good for any planting purposes, but is useful to fill in holes. Usually, either Regular or Screened Top Soil is spread over the top of Fill Dirt to create the best garden topsoil for planting.

Compost Screened Topsoil Mix

We also offer a Compost – Screened Topsoil Mix, composed of premium Screened Topsoil with Compost mixed in, which enriches the soil, making it ideal for garden topsoil. Another product we offer, plain Compost, can be mixed with the existing soil for enrichment of existing beds. Westminster Lawn Landscape Supply Yards showcased our premium mulches, topsoils, and composts at one of our first home shows in Maryland, sponsored by the Carroll County Times, on October 1st and 2nd, 2011. While the crowd was sparse as the season winds down, the experience was a positive one, and we were able to make contact  some new Maryland and Pennsylvania customers.

Our banners were created by Runkles Signs, right down the street from us on John St. in Westminster. Our custom wooden display bins were expertly designed by professional Gary Tackett, and work beautifully for the purpose of allowing people to see and touch our premium quality mulches, soils, sand, and landscape stones and gravels. It was nice to see how many people were drawn to our attractive display just to touch the materials and admire the quality.

WE WON!  Imagine our excitement when hearing the news that the 358 Super Sprint car that Westminster Lawn Landscape Supply Yards sponsors won the Trone Outdoor Advertising Championship Event on Friday evening, September 30, 2011 at Trail-Ways Speedway in Hanover, Pa.

The #35 car is driven by Steve Owings, a close family friend, who has been racing since childhood. This was the final race in the 2011 series at Trail-ways, and Steve won two others this season as well, on June 3, and the opener on April 15 of this year.  His overall points standing puts him in 15th position, with 449.00 points. He also had 3 heat wins this year.

This was a great way to finish what can be a frustrating sport. Steve had his ups & downs this year, along with several costly crashes and breakdowns, but his persistence paid off. “We came out of the box fast, and it was nice to get a win at the end,” he said in victory lane.Steve started sixth in the race, which ran for 30 laps.

He took the lead exiting turn four of Lap 13 by lapping traffic before the second caution of the event. Coming off turn two of Lap 24, Steve made contact with Joe Trone, Jr., losing much of the lead. The only red flag of the event occurred when a crash between Mike Duncan, Jr., and Randy Whisler flipped Duncans’ car on turn four of Lap 27. On the restart, Steve took off ahead of the field to victory lane, to claim the $2,000 prize.
